On this day in 1861, Union and Confederate troops clashed outside of Manassas, Virginia in the first major engagement of the Civil War.

Minnesota Governor Alexander Ramsey in 1860. Not long after this photo was taken Ramsey was one of the first governors to commit state troops to the Union Army to fight in the Civil War.

Fire ultimately forced Major Anderson to surrender. Remarkably, no one died in the bombardment. But 750,000 Americans would be killed before the Civil War ended in 1865.
