San Diego Fire-Rescue is enhancing its capabilities with new equipment as the region enters peak wildfire season.

California's largest wildfire of the year is burning about 200 miles away from San Diego County, but the impacts can be felt here at home with hazy skies and the smell of smoke.

"We are seeing an elevated fire potential index across the region. The City of San Diego is not taking any chances," said Mayor Todd Gloria.

Cal Fire responded Thursday afternoon to a small brush fire in south San Diego near Otay Mesa. The fire started around 1 p.m.
