Officials said one person was pronounced dead in a crash involving 53 vehicles on Interstate 40 West near the 259 mile marker.

The crash occurred on westbound I-70 near milepost 231 at 10:16 a.m. Initial reports indicated as many as eight cars were potentially involved. When Troopers arrived on the scene, they found 11 vehicles were involved in the pileup crash, including two semis and one F350 hauling a livestock trailer.

One person was killed after a snowy 50-car pileup in central North Carolina Wednesday night, according to the Orange Rural Fire Department. The crashes happened around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 along Interstate 40 near Interstate 85 South’s connector in Alamance County.
