Firefighters in Canada are still tackling more than 400 blazes across the country, with over 200 of them considered out of control. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate affected areas.

New York City had the worst air quality of any major city in the world by Tuesday evening, and code reds were issued in much of the northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Midwest.

Blame Canada. Western wildfires roughly 2,500 miles away in Alberta continue to seep smoke into the upper levels of the atmosphere, which then travel the jet stream east toward the D.C. region.

A series of wildfires burning across central Canada sent smoke billowing into the U.S. over the weekend, with few signs that the blazes will subside anytime soon.
