Visitors who braved the 100-degree weather for the Peña Adobe Historical Society’s monthly open house were rewarded with the rich oral and visual tradition of the Buffalo Soldiers.
The annual award is named on behalf of the "Buffalo Soldiers," or members of African-American cavalry regiments of the U.S. Army started in the 1800s serving in the western United States.
Four African American army regiments were stationed at Fort Davis from 1867-1885. The "Buffalo Soldiers" there and beyond were key to westward expansion of the U.S.
