Blue Bell is joining a wave of ice cream makers that are swearing off certified artificial colors in their products.
Blue Bell’s Groom’s Cake ice cream, retired in 2018, is back in stores after fans voted for its return in the Great Scoop Revival Flavor Tournament.
Blue Bell regularly rotates flavors in and out of stores, but Cookie Cake has been absent since 2020. It was the runner-up in the company’s Great Scoop Revival Flavor Tournament.
Tin Roof is a vanilla ice cream with chocolate sundae sauce and roasted peanuts, dipped in a dark chocolate flavored coating. Blue Bell has a plant in Sylacauga, as well as Brenham, Texas.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted use the color gardenia (genipin) blue in various foods. Additionally, ice cream could also be shedding artificial food dyes in years to come.
