Guitarist and singer Rick Derringer, who shot to fame at 17 when his band The McCoys recorded “Hang On Sloopy,” had a hit with “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and earned a Grammy Award for producing “Weird Al” Yankovic’s debut album, has died. He was 77.

Derringer died Monday in Ormond Beach, Florida. No cause of death was provided, but Variety reported that he had been in “ill health” for several months.

Birmingham native Jason Hamric, a former guitarist for the indie rock band Three Finger Cowboy and founder of Substrate Radio, has died. He was 53. Hamric died on Wednesday morning, May 28, after an emergency hospitalization May 24 for a bacterial infection, said his wife, Jacklyn Loquidis.
