Dean's Beauty Salon and Barber Shop opened 68 years ago. The owner plans a party Saturday to celebrate the journey and the salon's designation in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Black-owned shop has been at its current location since 1977. It was part of a string of Black businesses that sprang up when much of L.A. was still segregated.

"I never thought we would have a barbershop at school or any of the schools that I've gone to, but they made it happen, and I'm thankful for that," McDaniel told 11 News.

She has her own shop, Nancy's Salon of Beauty, at 9 E. Main St. on the square. He and Carl Witschi are the town's barbers at the Plymouth Barbershop a few doors down at 18 Sandusky St.
