AUSTIN (KXAN) — For the first time in roughly 15 years, new parking ordinance changes will take effect Saturday — including changes in fines and additional parking violations baked into city code.

Municipal court records show the city of Austin is owed about $7.4 million in unpaid parking fees for the past five years – with the amount of delinquent fees increasing 223% since 2020.

Lyndon Meris, enforcement services manager for the City of Austin, told KVUE that the program is as much about education as it is about enforcement. “Parking is always a challenge,” Meris said.

Austin City Council amended the city's parking policy to make parking in bike lanes and other areas a ticketable offense. Fines start at $50.
