Apple has issued a legal challenge against the British government over a demand to create a backdoor for encrypted iCloud accounts, as reported by Financial Times. The company has filed a complaint in the hopes to reverse the order.

By default, Apple provides end-to-end encryption on 14 of its products, like saved passwords; first introduced in December 2022, ADP adds encryption protection to nine more, including Photos, Voice Memos, and iCloud data and backups.

Apple has begun legal action to resist a secret demand by the U.K. government for access to iPhone users’ data. Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the Financial Times reports that the company has made an appeal to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, seeking (likely on grounds of U.S. national security) to have the order quashed.

Apple is taking the UK government to court over efforts to force the company to weaken iCloud encryption. The case, filed under the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), seeks to compel Apple to create a backdoor that would allow law enforcement access to user data, not just in the UK but potentially in other countries too.

Company wants to discourage other governments from using the same tactics; the appeal also likely objects to Apple being singled out for this requirement, analysts said.
