Smoke from Canadian wildfires is leading to very unhealthy air quality for much of Michigan, including all of Southeast Michigan. As of noon Thursday, Detroit has the fifth-worst air quality in the world.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to plague the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region, with multiple states under air quality alerts.

As a day progresses the air near the water’s surface can warm some and the inversion erodes. The smoke will lift and disappear into a larger space in the air over Michigan. So the strong visual of thick smoke turns into a faint haze of smoke all over the sky of Michigan.
