Thailand has accused Cambodia of violating a ceasefire agreement reached on Monday after days of deadly clashes along their disputed border, but negotiations between the two sides will continue.

A ceasefire agreed between Thailand and Cambodia took effect at midnight (1700 GMT Monday), temporarily halting heavy fighting along their shared border, though Thai authorities reported violations by Cambodian forces in several areas just hours later.

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai and Cambodian leaders will meet in Malaysia for talks to end hostilities, a spokesperson for the Thai prime minister’s office said Sunday. This comes following pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to end a deadly border dispute, now in its fourth day, which has killed at least 35 people and displaced more than 218,000.

People on both sides of the border share a cultural heritage much older than modern nation-states, dating back to the ancient Khmer civilization.

Thai and Cambodian militaries engage in ongoing negotiations following alleged ceasefire violations. The ceasefire, agreed upon in Malaysia after intense fighting displaced over 300,000, was reportedly breached by Cambodian troops.

Monks on both sides of the Cambodia-Thai conflict refuse to evacuate their temples, instead opting to stay and help as many locals as they can.
