The Boston Red Sox are finally on the board at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox are acquiring left-hander Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for top-20 prospect first baseman Blaze Jordan.

The Red Sox sent former third-round pick Blaze Jordan to the Cardinals and remain engaged about potential upgrades elsewhere.

Matz should throw a lot of curveballs and sinkers. He has used his sinker 59.4% of the time this season. He has thrown it more than 50% in every season except 2022 when he used it 48.5%. He’s in the 89th percentile in fastball run value.
