It’s hard to know if Trump's comments on Xi Jinping suggest the world’s two biggest economies are getting any closer to a deal on tariffs.

U.S. President Donald Trump's 50% tariffs on most imported steel and aluminum went into effect on Wednesday, an increase from previous 25% rate that had been in place.

The president first announced the doubling of tariffs on aluminum and steel at a rally in Pennsylvania last week.
