The northern lights — also called aurora borealis — could be visible in Alaska, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Maine, northern parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Iowa, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The stronger the geomagnetic storm, the more that people in central and southern reaches of the U.S. have a chance to see the stunning display.

A recent forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that several northern states may see the aurora borealis. Monday's "Kp," the scale the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses to measure the maximum forecasted geomagnetic activity, is a seven on a scale from zero to nine.
