Three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were killed Friday in an explosion at a training facility in East Los Angeles, a tragedy Sheriff Robert Luna called his agency’s deadliest day since 1857.

The sheriff said in the month of May, eight inmates from the LA County jail system were transferred to Immigration and Customers Enforcement custody while 12 were handed over to federal officials in June. All of them were convicted of serious crimes, such as attempted murder and rape, Luna added.

Sheriff Luna said that the department only transfers inmates already in custody over to ICE if presented with a federal judicial warrant that's signed by a judge.
