Horrifying details of atrocities are continuing to emerge from the Democratic Republic of the Congo 12 days after the Rwandan-backed armed group, M23, seized the eastern city of Goma. Nearly three-thousand people have been killed in the fighting – around two-thousand bodies are still to be buried.

MORE than 100 women were raped and burned alive during a jailbreak in the wartorn city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United Nations reported today. The attack took place as hundreds of prisoners broke out from the Munzenze prison on Monday as soldiers from the Rwandan-backed M23 militia began taking over the city.

Hundreds of Congolese women were raped and burnt alive after Rwandan-backed militants raided a prison. The female inmates were attacked in their wing inside Goma’s Munzenze prison during a mass jailbreak, UN peacekeeping chief Vivian van de Perre said.
