The Minneapolis mayor during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests has lost the backing of the Democratic party to a Somali-American after a contested vote by members of the party.

Minnesota state Sen. Omar Fateh received the DFL party endorsement for Minneapolis mayor on Saturday, while incumbent Jacob Frey criticized the decision as coming from an 'irregular' convention.

The Minneapolis Democratic-Farmer-Labor party is endorsing a candidate for mayor for the first time in 16 years and it is not incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey. State Senator Omar Fateh won the D-F-L endorsement at the convention on Saturday night.
