(CNN) — How you manage a cluster of health conditions known as metabolic syndrome could have a big impact on whether you develop dementia at a young age, according to a new study.
Metabolic syndrome components are tied to young-onset dementia risk, underscoring the need for prevention and management of related health conditions.
Metabolic syndrome was associated with 24% higher risk of dementia at any age. However, poor metabolic health was a bigger cognitive risk for participants in their 40s than those in their 50s.
Now, according to the study, people with metabolic syndrome were maybe 24% more likely to develop dementia at a young age, meaning before 65. That doesn't sound terribly high.
Researchers analyzed the markers of metabolic syndrome and who developed young-onset dementia between 2009 and the end of 2020, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology.
People who had metabolic syndrome, or a combination of those components, were 24% more likely to develop dementia at a young age, the data showed.
