Mac Jones playing well is a win-win scenario for the 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are undefeated through three weeks despite starting quarterback Brock Purdy missing two games due to a turf toe injury. Backup Mac Jones playing well in his absence is a win-win for the organization.
Quarterback Mac Jones, already serving in relief duty for the injured Brock Purdy, told reporters after Sunday's 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals that he reaggravated the same PCL sprain that hampered him during training camp.
Jones threw an interception with the game tied in the fourth quarter against the Cardinals when he fired a pass downfield to Ricky Pearsall that was picked off by Dadrion Taylor-Demerson. A few minutes later San Francisco took a safety to fall behind, but Jones was able to lead a game-winning drive in the final minutes.
Now in his third act as an NFL quarterback, Jones has already had two opportunities to prove that he has good football left in him. In the process, the 49ers have learned a lot about their No. 2 signal-caller, even as Brock Purdy is poised to return from a toe injury sooner than later.
