Texas Senator Ted Cruz joined Kerr County officials Monday during a news conference to update the public on the rescue and recovery efforts in Central Texas following the catastrophic flash flooding.

The Republican senator, who was on a preplanned family vacation, did not return to his state until 72 hours after the deadly disaster, which his office said was as quickly as possible.

In the early hours of July 4, the only sound many of the vacationers along the banks of the Guadalupe River would have heard was pounding rain and thunder. They didn’t get any official warning of the rapidly rising waters that ultimately proved deadly to dozens of people swept away in central Texas flash floods.

Kerr County officials provide an update Tuesday morning on the Central Texas flooding. Officials say 87 people have died in the county. Five campers and one counselor are still missing from Camp Mystic.

As rescuers continue to look for children still missing from Camp Mystic, FOX's Shaun Rabb has more on the young victims who lost their lives this weekend, and the camp director who lost his life trying to save theirs.
