A small Texas town that recorded no deaths in last weekend’s flood disaster had recently upgraded its emergency alert system — the kind of setup state, county and federal officials
This flood was the first time Comfort’s new siren system was activated. The county upgraded these emergency alerts back in 2024. Kendall County informed us that this cost roughly $70,000. A nonprofit paid $60,000 and Bandera Electric donated the poles.

More than 170 people are still believed to be missing a week after the forceful floodwater hit over the July Fourth weekend.
Authorities said at least 24 people have died in flooding around Kerr County, Texas, and officials are still performing water rescues.
July 17, 1987, is a day forever ingrained in his memory. At the time, he was an assistant pastor at a Mesquite church, leading a group of teens at the Pot O' Gold Christian camp near Comfort, Texas. Early that morning, they were told they'd need to evacuate because of the risk of flooding from the Guadalupe River.
The 1978 deluge began when remnants of a tropical storm crossed the Gulf of Mexico and entered Texas north of Brownsville. When it was over, 33 were dead.
