Berkowitz, who is now 72, is currently incarcerated at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County, New York. He was found guilty of six counts of second degree murder and seven counts of attempted second degree murder in 1978 and sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison for each murder.

Berkowitz dubbed himself the Son of Sam, a moniker he used to sign off his letters. He claimed the name was inspired by his neighbor's dog, with whom he had an ongoing dispute. He even alleged that demons communicated with him through the dog.
