In the battle of comedies, The Bad Guys 2 seems to have taken the lead over The Naked Gun, with the animated feature outperforming the Liam Neeson-led movie at the box office during its opening weekend.

The Naked Gun reboot/sequel wasn't a huge hit right away, but its box office opening was solid enough to keep hope alive for theatrical comedies in general.

Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu and Danny Huston also star. The fourth film in the long-dormant franchise, directed by Akiva Schaffer from a script he wrote with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, opens 31 years after the last movie, 1994’s Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, graced the big screen.
