Nintendo, the Switch 2 and Launch Day

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches June 5, 2025, with packaging that looks a wee bit too similar to the original Switch. It’ll launch with Mario Kart World as the must-have release alongside a bevy of other games. The Switch 2 will also be backward compatible with most original Switch games, and some will even receive free Switch 2 upgrades.
We are quickly closing in on the 24th July release date for the catchily-titled Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, and Nintendo has lifted the lid on a bunch of new features we can expect to find when playing on the new console.
Nintendo is adding a trio of new features to the Switch Online versions of N64 games, but you’ll need a Switch 2 to get the full benefit. N64 titles on the new console will support the Rewind feature and CRT Filter, but the only upgrade coming to the original Switch is the option to customize controls.
According to Nintendo, the larger size of the new console makes it incompatible with the Labo VR goggles. “The Nintendo Switch 2 console cannot be inserted into the Toy-Con VR Goggles accessory, so this game cannot be played,” the company said.
In a recent video, Nintendo showed off the Rewind and CRT features coming to N64 games on Switch 2. The Rewind feature allows players to roll back their gameplay to an earlier point by scrolling through a series of frames. In practice, this lets players redo tricky sections of a Mario Kart 64 course or take a mulligan in Mario Golf.
