It covers an area of 11.54 km² and had a population of 1007 in 435 households at the 2001 census, including Crostwick and the population increasing to 1,184 in 506 households at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of Broadland. As well as Stanninghall, Horstead also includes the hamlets of Largate and Heggatt.
