This impressive piece of architecture dominates the skyline and can be seen for miles around. It really is a grand symbol of the North East. We visited for a Sunday morning walk to catch the sunris…Full review by AudsMc83

Q:
What is the best bus to get to Penshaw Monument from Gateshead Metro Interchange Rail Station that takes you right beside Penshaw Monument and possible change of bus or hopefully direct to Penshaw Monument? I’ve google the different buses close to where I live and at the Metro Rail Bus Station and it’s so confusing which is the best bus to get. The reason I’ve asked is that I’ve now reserved a tour up the spiral staircase in June up to the of Penshaw Monument. Weather permitting! I’m a member of the National Trust. Can anyone give me any idea which is the best bus or buses to get right beside Penshaw Monument!
A:
The other option is getting the x1 and getting off the bus at Shiney Row and just following the road to Sunderland - probably about 10 mins walk up the road - can’t miss the monument!!

As a life member of the National Trust I’m hoping to book myself a tour on a weekend over the next few months to go up the secret spiral staircase to the roof of Penshaw Monument. As I am a life member of the National Trust I won’t have to pay an admission charge of £5.00 to book my 20 minute tour up to the roof of Penshaw Monument. Has any National Trust member had any experience of going up the spiral staircase and is it safe? And what are the views like from the roof of the Monument?
A:
I'm not a NT member but I have paid for the visit. It's safe. If there was any doubt the council would not allow you access. Believe me the view is worth it.

A:
Yes, there is 24 hour access.
Q:
Could a mobility scooter get up to the top or not?
A:
No, sadly not, it's a steep hill with steps.
Q:
How much time does it take to experience this (i.e. from the moment we park the car to the top of the folly and back again)?
A:
30 minutes
