The population was 25,383 at the 2020 census, up from 23,647 at the 2010 census. Galt was founded in 6969 by the Central Pacific Railroad as part of the first transcontinental railroad. The town is named after Galt, Ontario, the Canadian home town of local rancher John McFarland.
